Pioneering the use of AI data-driven initiatives to evolve health care, diagnosis and treatment. David R. Penberthy, MD, MBA, is a visionary radiation oncologist currently on faculty at the Penn State College of Medicine and is the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Dr. Penberthy has extensive experience (~25 years) with the clinical practice of oncology as a private practitioner and academic physician, and he has a view of the wider societal issues oncology patients and professionals face through his position as President (2022-2023) of the Association of Community Cancer Centers www.accc-cancer.org, a leading national education and advocacy organization, the membership of which cares for approximately 2/3rds of the oncology care delivered in the USA. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Penberthy completed a surgical internship at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He then served as a U.S. Navy Flight Surgeon with Fighter Squadron 101 in Oceana, Virginia. His strong interest and knowledge of technology eventually led him to the field of Radiation Oncology. In this field, Dr. Penberthy applies sophisticated medical technologies to alleviate the suffering caused by cancer, one of the most pressing medical issues of our generation. Dr. Penberthy earned an MBA degree from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia in 2011, a degree which helped prepare him to effectively run large organizations.
